Summary/Abstract: This is a consideration about prevailing current interpretation of European identity as something historically developed from mutual European philosophical, religious and scientific roots. Th is conception mythologizes European history kartely and omits such historic events which infirmed this development. Th e author is trying to present a new conception of European identity as a complex of gradual processess of forming European self-definition mostly in confrontation with foreign cultures. European identity has been historically formed in the processes of connection of diversity or variety and if its reflexive way of existence continues, it can cope better with the challenges of imminent engagement of civilizations.
