In the labyrinths of modernism: cinematic parallels between Bulgaria and Japan

Summary/Abstract: Modernism seen as a mind map through the optics of cinema is definitely a provocative object of study. This article is an attempt to outline the contours of a future and comprehensive analysis comparing the perception of cinema in the modernist visions of Japanese and Bulgarian intellectual circles in the period between the two world wars. The provocation comes from a 1929 screening in Bulgaria of the avant-garde film Crossroads by Kinugasa Teinosuke and the corresponding review by Pantele Karasimeonov in the pages of cinema journal Nasheto Kino.
