Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with the dynamic fate of the Slovak National Opera Krútňava. It took its composer Eugen Suchoň (1941–1949) eight years to compose it, while these eight years were marked by multiple regime changes in the political sphere and by changing aesthetic ideals in the artistic one. From its 1949 world première to its so far last staging in 2008, the opera underwent complicated ideological, musical-dramaturgical, and staging metamorphoses, and the debate about its “true” version lasts to this day.
