Summary/Abstract: Thanks to its Mining Academy, the town of Příbram became a centre of academic life in the Brdy region in the 2nd half of the 19th century and in the 1st half of the 20th century. Moreover, in terms of mining academies it became significant in the whole central Europe. However, coal mining in the Ostrava region marked the end of this school in Příbram and its new era in the city of Ostrava aft er World War II. Th e end of a nearly 100-year period of this academic tradition seemed to be an ultimate end of academic education in Příbram. Th e detached department of VŠERS České Budějovice in Příbram, which was set up in 2004, offers the town a new chance to become a regional centre of academic life.
