CHALLENGES OF PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION OF IMMOVABLE CULTURAL HERITAGE AT THE LEVEL OF LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

Summary/Abstract: The protection and preservation of immovable cultural heritage at the local self-government level is (mostly) not a particulary important topic in relation to other problems that local self governments face. Like the entire held of culture, this topic primarily captures the attention of a narrow circle of experts dealing with these issues and relevant institutions responsible for the protection of cultural heritage. The subject of research in this paper focused only on one aspect of cultural heritage - cultural monuments. The aim of the paper was to map the most important challenges that municipalities and cities in the Republic of Serbia face in the process of protecting and preserving immovable cultural heritage - cultural monuments, from the perspective of local self-government. The paper outlines the most significant problems identified in a ten-year practice, along with specific proposals on how to overcome them in the future.
