Summary/Abstract: The Russian armed aggression against Ukraine determined many countries to react. One of these reactions was the adoption of international sanctions. Serbia, although a candidate to the EU accession, was the only country in the entourage of the EU that did not adhere to the sanctions against Russia. Moreover, Serbia displayed a friendly attitude towards Russia since the launch of the aggression. This article aims to explain why Serbia had a pro-Russian attitude. In doing so, the study uses reports, surveys, official documents, and statements of political elites to explain the Serbian positioning. The results indicate that this attitude was a result of foreign countries’ behaviours, the Kosovo dispute, and Pan-Slavism. Somewhat surprisingly, the religious connection did not appear to play a role in the process.
