THE DOUBLE WREATH CROWN OF KING STEPHEN TVRTKO KOTROMANIĆ: A NEW INTERPRETATION

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we want to offer a different interpretation of the term double wreath crown: it referred to the honor of the ban and the royal dignity, to which Tvrtko Kotromanić was crowned. As a Bosnian ban, Tvrtko was crowned with a Serbian crown, in order to rule the Serbian throne, after which his title of ban title seem to have merged into the royal title. This was Tvrtko's initial act, related to his person, his conquests, pretensions and ambitions, which is why the concept later disappeared, abandoned by both himself and by his successors. The wreath symbolized the period of adaptation to the new position, marked by the change of the ruling rank, so it did not represent a special doctrine that was being built among the kings from the Kotromanić family, but a strategy belonging to a point of Tvrtko's life and reign. At that moment, the new king had to define his position, at first towards the City of Dubrovnik, because he claimed the Saint Demetrius tribute - the regal right of the Serbian kings, but also the earlier Ston tribute, which was paid to the Bosnian bans since the time of Tvrtko's uncle. For this reason, King Tvrtko confirmed the privileges representing two parties: the one as the Bosnian ban and the other representing earlier "Lords of Serbia and Rascia", while his successors confirmed everything together. Double wreath is mentioned by Tvrtko only once, at the beginning of his reign, due to his rise to the royal dignity, after which is no longer mentioned, not even by him, and especially not by his successors. We believe that such an important doctrine, even if it was formal, would have been emphasized at least once more, if not by King Tvrtko himself, at least by other kings from the Kotromanić family, who emphasized their royal position, initially based on the blood relationship with holy born Nemanjići.
