Accelerated Democratic Decline in Romania. The Rebirth of the Single Party

Summary/Abstract: The oversized governing coalition is not to be seen as a serious threat in long-term, consolidated democracies. In the case of accelerated de-democratization, as it the current case of Romania, in a militarized system where the executive power largely prevails over the judiciary and the legislative, such an oversized coalition is more likely to be seen as the rebirth of the single party. With plans to amend the Constitution and with actions of consolidating furthermore the executive power and limit citizens’ rights and freedoms, the rebirth of the single party rings the bell of an accelerated authoritarian transition, leading back to the incipient steps towards democratization in the early 1990s. Since the democratic backsliding only accelerated during the last couple of years, one can hardly predict if the political system is to stabilize or to further accelerate into a pure totalitarianism.
