Summary/Abstract: In his essay Fascism, Petre Andrei demonstrates that the type of nationalism promoted by Italian fascism is different from the liberal type. Andrei states that "(...) true nationalism does not exclude well-understood democracy and does not imply dictatorship". This statement is in antithesis with the conception of some representatives of contemporary historiography who consider that with the acceptance of the concept of the national state by liberalism, the original meaning of liberalism was perverted. During this short study, the author proposes, starting from Petre Andrei's statement, to demonstrate that in the Romanian case, liberalism and nationalism were synonymous with the creation of the Romanian nation, with the struggle for the foundation of the modern Romanian state, with the winning of independence and the modernization .
