Summary/Abstract: The author analyzes relations between pop-culture, mainstream cinema, and protest cultures, based on the example of civil rights cinema of the 1980s and the 1990s and the 21st century new civil rights cinema. Both “sub-genres” are considered in the political and ideological contexts of Reaganism and the Obama era cinema and analyzed from the perspective of memory studies. These particular contexts show an impact of contemporary policies on the ways in which the past and the collective memory are being shaped by texts of culture.
