Summary/Abstract: The contribution deals with basic methodological aspects of corruption measurement. Measuring corruption statistically is difficult if not impossible due to the illicit nature of the transactions and imprecise definitions of corruption. Since 1995, Transparency International has published an annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) ranking the countries of the world according to „the degree to which corruption is perceived to exist among public officials and politicians“. The organization defines corruption as „the abuse of entrusted power for private gain“. This contribution assesses corruption levels and trends among EU member states based on data from Transparency International and own calculations.
