Summary/Abstract: The Bologna process (since 1999) has emphasized the mutual harmonisation of the university systems throughout Europe and the overall university quality has presented as the necessary precondition of this development. The possibilities of the quality assurance and the assessment of universities are topics of special discussions and research projects in many different European countries. The present approaches are based mostly on the accreditation of study programmes or faculties performed by national accreditation bodies. As seen, the accreditation process does not include the assessment of university quality management system even though this system is the fundament of overall quality of universities and other higher education institutions. The article analyses some of the current approaches to the quality assessment of universities and other higher education institutions, and compares them to the usual accreditation requirements in the Czech Republic. It also confirms the hypothesis that the EFQM Excellence Model represents the most comprehensive framework for the quality assessment of higher education institutions nowadays.
