Summary/Abstract: National debt represents the overall indebtedness of a government. The objective of this article is to describe the national debt of the Czech Republic, causes of its origin and means of financing the national debt. National debt is a debt defined and based on Act no. 218/2000 on budget rules as a summary of national financial liabilities comprised by obligations of the country that arose from the country´s accepted foreign loans, credits from banks, from issued national bonds and other obligations of the country (other country chips). Furthermore, national debt is compared here to government debt and to public debt. Possible solutions to moderate national indebtedness are mentioned in the contribution, as well as the international comparison of indebtedness of the Czech Republic to other countries of the EU. While preparing this study, primarily a method of descriptive and comparative analysis was used.
