While the rural renewal programme, which hasbeen known for 20 years, allows us to look at the completed projects and the challenges weface from a different perspective, the concept of smart villages is such a new solution thatit is still unknown what it will work for and what its effects will be. The article characterisesboth concepts and points out their similarities and differences. In addition, an attempt wasmade to answer whether the concept of smart villages rural development is a continuationof the rural renewal programme or a completely new solution to improve the qualityof life in the countryside. The comparative analysis made it possible to identify commonfeatures of both programmes, including activation of the local community, consideringlocal conditions and resources, and implementing both infrastructural and social projects.Recommendations for further development of smart villages were also formulated.
