Summary/Abstract: Domestic violence, especially against women, is not a new or unknown phenomenon but an almost common pattern of behavior in almost all societies throughout history, created due to traditional gender inequality and the subordination of women. Social interest in the study of the domestic violence phenomenon began in the mid-20th century, with the rise of awareness of women's equality in society. Most societies face the phenomenon of domestic violence, which includes many forms of abusive behavior and represents a pattern of coercive behavior, resulting in physical abuse or the threat of physical abuse, repeated psychological abuse, rape, social isolation, deprivation, intimidation, economic blackmail, and other forms of abuse. Domestic violence represents one of the main challenges for the society of Bosnia and Herzegovina due to numerous risk factors, of which the long-term political, economic, and social crisis and tension in society, as well as growing poverty, create constant pressure on the structure and relationships within the family. The purpose of this paper is to look at and point out this widespread form of violation of the rights and freedoms of a significant number of women from a sociological and legal perspective and to warn of the importance of preventing and suppressing violence against women. The paper also proposes certain protective measures against domestic violence and the prevention of violence.
