Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes volunteering as an expression of philanthropy and its effect on regional development. The appropriate practical examples show volunteering in non-profit organizations as the option of active citizenship which leads to the improved quality of life, the increase of mutual tolerance and solidarity. The field investigation assessed the public opinion on volunteering and charitable willingness to help. The qualitative fieldwork was carried out using semi-structured interviews with representatives of NGOs active in the field of social services, and with volunteers.
