Summary/Abstract: Religious education has been an integral part of modern English education since its foundation in 1870’s. The objective of this paper is to describe its position in the English education from a historical perspective. The origins are in municipal schools which were to provide religious education for all pupils from the authorized denominations. The post-World War I period is marked by a crisis of religious pedagogy, but the upcoming years of the World War II catastrophe caused a rise of religious education and pedagogy, which continued till the end of 1950’s. However, 1960’s was a time of another crisis, which was reflected in the works of the two most important figures of the English modern religious pedagogy – Harold Loukes and Ninian Smart. The current concept of religious education emerged in the 1980’s. Christianity has remained the privileged religion, but the other five main religions of Britain are taught as well. The status of religious education in the English education is very specific and debated, which is the consequence of the unique formation of the syllabuses, its exception from the National Curriculum or its particular subject.
