Summary/Abstract: This article is to characterize a logistics centre as an integrated system consisted of individual subsystems, components and specific connections among them. The logistics centre system is not only described, but also expressed mathematically. All of the identified subsystems and components of the logistics centre system are subsequently analysed in real terms by the staff in charge of them in order to improve the planning and management. In the other part of the article the design of logistics centres itself is focused on in detail and the main factors that must be taken into account during the design process are identified. A general algorithm is put forward to be used within the context of logistics centre planning. The article is concluded by focusing on the results of the verification of compliance with the main design factors for logistics centres in real conditions on the basis of a representative selected sample of European logistics centres.
