Summary/Abstract: A rural backyard is a specific area naturally connecting the countryside and village environment. Thus the rural backyard creates a special buffer between the open natural countryside and densely inhabited zones. This paper deals with the etymology of the expression rural backyard and explains its ecological and technical functions in the process. A qualitative research method has been applied in the form of questionnaires, distributed in two selected villages in the Czech Republic to explain their social dimension as well. The paper uses its first findings to explain the multifunctional aspect of the rural backyards – a specific place yet gradually disappearing from the Czech countryside. The study shows that the rural backyards still have an important role in the lives of local inhabitants and as such should become an object of further studies.
