Summary/Abstract: The authors analyze the issue of the fundamental parts of defence support system carried out by local government authorities in the Slovak republic. Following the selected historical processes and events that form the state security strategy, characterize the principal scientific and scholarly approaches of security community, the mechanisms of defence support and define the basic terms such as: defence, defence support system, preparation of the defence or the defence system of the region. The article also presents the causes and the nature of changes in the structure of local government authorities and also presents the system of transition and transfer of competence from territorial military authorities to the relevant departments of the district authorities in the context of the legislative processes and implemented organizational changes at the mentioned level of public administration. On the basis of characteristics of mentioned parts of the current defence support system carried out by local government authorities as well as by local self-government authorities, the authors present strengths and weaknesses and suggest options of its optimization.
