Summary/Abstract: Media theories focus, in addition to other things, on the influence that the media have on the recipients of the media messages. The media generate their own images and perceptions of the reality and create the frame within which the public discerns and interprets these images. The media create the society of the spectacle and hyperreality, and initiate the process of the mediatization that the political activities also adapt to. Political elites strive to accommodate this process and its principles of commercialization. However, at the same time, these elites also attempt to control the media content in spite of the fact that, by doing so, they oppress freedom of the media and threaten the democratic nature of the society.
