Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the role of individual work of students while learning foreign languages in non-linguistic higher educational establishments. The author considers the new paradigm of higher education, aimed to train high-level specialists, as well as taking into account the existing problems: a lack of classroom hours and not always a sufficient level of knowledge of a foreign language at the time of entering a university. It also reveals, that today knowledge of a foreign language is a measure of professional’s readiness to cooperate with foreign colleagues not only in his country, but also with foreign countries as partners, which becomes more and more a daily routine of our life.
