Summary/Abstract: This paper describes the learning situation in which English teaching coursebooks are being chosen by language teachers in the Czech Republic. The key role of teachers in the process is determined mainly by the absence of binding criteria and assistance provided by superior authority. The study also presents the results of a questionnaire survey which reveals that the most commonly used course book in the school year 2016/2017 was Maturita Solution, followed by New Headway and New English File. The level of the used coursebooks in individual school years differs greatly, perhaps due to variables of the learning context.
