Summary/Abstract: This paper argues for the need for curricular documents based on social constructivist theories in language teaching. It also describes the development, individual parts and functions of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as a key document on which currently valid curricular documents determining English language teaching in the Czech Republic are based. These documents are analysed and evaluated with a view to proposing several options for improvement.
