Summary/Abstract: Romance languages inherit most of their common vocabulary from Vulgar Latin, and this core lexis includes the adjectives (and nouns) that designate the names of the fundamental colors, with some exceptions. Nonetheless, the semantic evolutions from Latin to Romance are tortuous, since there is no biunivocal correspondence between the Latin terms and the Romance ones, and certain elements belonging to this semantic field manifest divergent evolutions in Romance languages. In this paper we will try to analyze the circumstances and mechanisms of such evolutions in both a diachronic and synchronic perspective.
