Summary/Abstract: The article highlights the capacity of the preface discourse to legitimize the work that it is supposed to warmly recommend to the target audience. Our case study aims, firstly, at an 'authorial' preface (Robinson Crusoe, 1719) and, secondly, at an allographic preface, more precisely a translator's preface (the translator-preface being Petru Comarnescu, for one 1943 edition). The two prefaces analyzed show, each in its own way, the ambivalence of the authors towards the subjects and objects described.
