Summary/Abstract: Riddles are a type of fun, appreciated at all times for their subtlety and ingenuity. They use, in the construction of semantic content, unusual images, which are often based on various metaphorical phenomena. This work exploits Eugeniu Coşeriu's integral theory on metaphor and examines how creativity manifests itself in the linguistic domain of discourse. We will highlight that these “universal units of the human imagination” (E. Coşeriu) are culturally marked and project, through expressive designation and ambiguity, human mental representations linked mainly to the surrounding world.
