Summary/Abstract: This paper provides a study of the evolution of common finances of the European Union (or European Communities). The development over time is presented and motivations for introduced changes, as was for instance the introduction of the multiannual financial perspective, are studied. Current procedure of accepting the annual budget and the multiannual financial framework is described. In the last part, patterns of changes in expenditures over time are analyzed; in particular, period 1988-2020 is discussed.
