Summary/Abstract: This paper is a part of the initial studies on the research of financial self-sufficiency and dependence on subsidies of small municipalities in the South Bohemian region. The aim was to assess the impact of their distance from the district town as one of the factors affecting the inancial self-sufficiency indicator of the municipality. For the purpose of the research, taking into account the settlement structure of the Czech Republic, small municipality was defined as a municipality with 500–4999 inhabitants. As a measure of financial self-sufficiency, the ratio between adjusted own incomes (own income without shared taxes) and total income was chosen - the degree of financial self-sufficiency in a more narrow concept. Firstly, all municipalities of the selected category (South Bohemian Region) and their distance from České Budějovice (district town) were assessed. The dependence between the assessed variables in the examination of the whole set of municipalities was not confirmed. The municipalities were further divided into other subgroups according to the number of inhabitants (500–999, 1000–1999 and 2000–4900), their geographical location (peripheral, suburban and other) and the administrative unit of individual municipalities with delegated competencies. In the case of municipalities with 2000–4900 inhabitants and in the municipalities of the České Budějovice administrative unit, a moderate dependence between the distance and the degree of financial self-sufficiency of the municipality in a narrower sense was identified. In the case of similarly selected samples, this factor should be taken into account when assessing the financial self-sufficiency of small municipalities in the South Bohemian Region.
