Summary/Abstract: The study characterises the philosophy of modern, especially European prison system, with an emphasis on the principles of humanisation, efficiency and security. Based on his long-term clinical psychological experience, the author considers the trivium of conscience – guilt – repentance to be the key aspect in the treatment of prisoners. This algorithm is for him also the starting point for theoretical considerations and practical applications of the latest penitentiary trends, which is a prison system oriented to the victim and is sensitive to the prisoner’s family. At the same time, the author calls for an increase in the proportion of penology courses in university curricula, especially in study programmes training social workers, teachers and educators.
