Summary/Abstract: The author focuses on the controversial play Zdstupca (Stellvertreter, The Deputy, 1963) by Hochhuth, which portrays Pope Pius XII. and his attitude to holocaust. That year, The Deputy was staged by Kurfurstendamm theatre in West Berlin for the first time and since then, it has been staged in several countries worldwide. The author uses citations in profuse, to show the past and current positions of the Vatican on the play, as well as those of producers and politicians. In particular, it focuses on the production of the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava (1966).
