Summary/Abstract: The term of office of a judge at the European Court of Human Rights may be terminated for reasons connected with the person of the judge (expiry of his or her term of office, removal, resignation, death) or as a result of the cessation of the status of Party to the European Convention on Human Rights of the State in respect of which the said judge was elected. Cessation of the status of Party to the Convention of the State in respect of which the judge to the Court has been elected shall automatically, without any formality and with effect from the same day, bring about the cessation of the term of office of the judge in question. No particular extension of the term of office of the said judge, in order to continue to deal with cases already referred to him, is possible.
