Summary/Abstract: The study describes activities of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo congregation (SMCB) in the Brno diocese in the years 1862–2020. The time span is between 1862, the year when the congregation had come to its first place of work in the territory of Brno diocese i. e. to Líšeň (at that time an independent municipality joined to the town of Brno in 1944) and the present. After a brief description of the origin, early history of the congregation and be-ginning of its work in Bohemia and Moravia (the first sisters arrived from French Nancy to Prague in 1837) and an outline of further development, there follows a list of 13 branch houses chronologically arranged according to the date of sisters´ arrival at their place of work. At the very end of the study there is briefly emphasized a phenomenon of the so-called small houses where during the communist totalitarian regime new members of the congregation were accepted in secret. In the area of the Brno bishopric there were four small houses and one was in Jihlava. The congregation used to establish its new place of activity with at least three sisters. The places were then abandoned from various reasons, not always known (it might be because of e. g. lack of sisters, or during the communist era, that sisters were expelled by the State Office for Religious Matters). The main activity of the sisters was care of the poor and ill, and school education. At present sisters from the Brno diocese work in one place only, in Moravské Budějovice (taking care of the elderly). The basic sources used for the study were the documents to individual branch houses deposited in the congregation archives, in the district archives or the Archives of the Town of Brno, then the written documents from the bishop´s office (i. e. bureau and office of diocese bishop) and consistory (an advisory board of diocese bishop) deposited in the Moravian Land Archives.
