Fajbuś Opatowski – a Szadek merchant and man of success from the beginning of 19th century

Summary/Abstract: The first half of 19th century was a time of rapid economic development on Polish territories, which created great opportunities for the improvement of the quality of life of entire local communities as well as individuals. One of the persons who were successful in the economic sphere was Fajbuś Opatowski, a Szadek burgher of Mosaic confession. He was a man having initiative and entrepreneurial spirit, innovative and not afraid of taking risks. He first conducted business activity in Szadek, dealing mainly in salt trading. Gradually he expanded the scope of business, to concentrate finally on trading in wool and cloth. F. Opatowski maintained contacts with an increasing number of clothiers in Zduńska Wola. He used the outwork system in cloth manufacture – provided the weavers with wool and collected the produced cloth. In the mid-1820s he moved from Szadek to Zduńska Wola, which was growing very quickly at that time. Soon his textile business grew to become the biggest in Szadek district and he made a fortune.
