Summary/Abstract: Through the visual experience, the image in art contributes to the development of critical thinking and imagination (the latter especially is necessary in the educational process) and thus holds an important role in enhancing learning and techniques for the cultivation of critical thinking. Religion is one of the sources of inspiration in art. In Religious Education, Byzantine icons can be used, for example, as images in texts, as works of art, as sources of information, in field trip visits to religious monuments, museums or art galleries. The interior of Orthodox Christian churches is decorated with icons. As an instructional tool, the Byzantine icon transfers the message of Christ to the faithful and helps them to understand better the concepts and the symbols. On one hand, they render Christian doctrines accessible to the students and, on the other hand, they influence them by creating religious experiences. In Religious Education is suggested the use of the Artful thinking technique, which, as a teaching tool, guides students to express their thoughts and feelings.
