Summary/Abstract: The contribution consists of two parts. The first part deals with information about preparation for issuing the book by Gustav Friedrich: Učebná kniha palaeo-grafie latinské (Textbook of Latin Palaeography), especially on the correspondence with historian Josef Kalousek. Gustav Friedrich had begun to work on the book during his stay in Vienna in 1894, in November 1896 the book was mentioned in the correspondence with Josef Kalousek, and a few months later, the Czech Academy of Sciences and Art granted a sum of 400 guldens for its publishing. The book, which played an important role in Gustav Friedrich’s habilitation for the branch of auxiliary sciences of history at the Philosophical Faculty of Prague University and should have been issued in the same year, finally appeared in 1898. The delay was caused by Gustav Friedrich´s stay in Rome and that the author himself prepared pen-and-ink drawings of pictorial samples. Later the book was used for teaching palaeography at the university. The second part of the contribution is devoted to a palaeography teaching during the existence of the State Archival School and its changes. Besides medieval palaeography, since the beginning attention was paid to a modern palaeography though less, the teachers there were Gustav Friedrich and J. B. Novák exchanged by F. Roubík in 1931. Slavonic and Greek palaeography were non-compulsory subjects taught by J. Vajs. Teaching of palaeography in the post-war courses was restricted and as “training in palaeography and epigraphy” led by O. Bauer. The contribution also deals with the problem of gaining palaeographic samples.
