Summary/Abstract: Josef Emler graduated from history at the Vienna University, in one of the first courses given by a newly established and, thanks to Theodor von Sickel, modern workplace for auxiliary sciences of history, in the Institut für österreichische Ge-schichtsforschung. After his studies he left for Prague and had a few temporary jobs in his profession as well as in teaching. Then he took post in the Capital City of Prague Archives, which was shortly before it formed, and also as a pedagogue of the subject at Prague University (having not been divided at that time). In 1882, after the division of the University, he left for the Czech University. He has been known as a popular teacher and a tireless editor of historical narrative and especially diplomatic sources. It is a historical” instrumentarium” used to a large extent to present. On the other hand, it is less known that Josef Emler belonged to the notable cultural workers and organizers of the Czech public life. We can point out various functions he devoted himself to and at the top there was his fundamental participation in the construction of the main building of the present National Museum. The most important functions of his were: a member in Královská česká společnost nauk (Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences), in Česká akademie věd a umění (Czech Academy of Sciences and Art) and in Společnost Českého musea (Society of Bohemian Museum) where he used to be an editor of a leading journal for human sciences i. e. Časopis českého musea (Journal of Bohemian Museum).
