Summary/Abstract: EU enlargement after 2004 has brought new challenges. One of the most significant of these was the significant increase in the development gap. The role of the common regional policy was therefore of particular importance for the acceding countries. However, it was questionable whether, despite cultural and economic differences, the Central European countries would be able to take advantage of EU resources and build a self-sustaining regional development system. This study uses the example of Hungary to show how these countries have adapted to these challenges.
