Summary/Abstract: The case study is a striking example of a life story of a man born at the end of the 19th century, a member of the Central European generation that went through several regimes with divergent ideologies and social-economic goals as well as with various means of achieving them. This generation had to put up with repeated individual freedom restrictions. The socialisation process of Otto Rydlo was extraordinarily distressful; his identity was repeatedly subject to resocialization strikes. Rydlo, who originated from proletarian milieu of a small town, became a loyal sup-porter of radical socialism – communism, however, as middle-aged he appreciated the value of education and creative work and became a philanthropic businessman, finally, after the communist taking power, when he lost foothold in his life path, he found a faith in God, a catholic faith, thus becoming an enemy of the regime. A political prisoner of the First Czechoslovak Republic as well as of the Communist regime did not, however, get embittered, he managed to keep his personal identity, stayed a good man who could, again and again, find a new strength and a new way of life.
