Summary/Abstract: The study focuses on editing written documents by the Moravian Land historiographer Beda Dudík (1815–1890) who approached this issue in a rather specific way by respecting older methodical patterns. In Dudík’s case, three subsequent phases can be identified that vary not only in the content significance of the edited documents and in the level of editor’s erudition as a historian and archivist, but also in the purpose that was followed by the edition. First, Dudík approached this issue as a teacher influenced by the Moravian patriotism and followed, therefore, especially patriotic, popularising and educational goals. Later, he treated the editions more as a historian and archivist, which led to progressive precision in his work. Yet, he could not avoid mistakes and errors, all the more so since he did not define any definite way of editing, nor did he accept any modern approaches of the time, introduced mostly by the Institute for Austrian Historical Research.
