Summary/Abstract: The old castle of Landstein with the adjacent estate, located in the South-East Bohemia, was acquired, after Lords of Landstein, Krajíř of Krajek, Khuen von Belasi or Czernin of Chudenice, by House of Herberstein in 1685. The family were originally from Styria and only later settled down in various crownlands. The estate of Land-stein became a fee tail through the testament of Ferdinand Ernest Count of Herberstein in 1691, that is a real property that cannot be sold, devised by will, or otherwise alienated. The Herberstein owned also the estate in Třešť in Bohemian Lands, the rest of their property was located in Austria. Between 1685–1831, six counts of Herberstein successively stayed in Landstein, Josef Franz Count of Herberstein, due to the heritage, changed his name in 1780 to Herberstein-Moltke. At the beginning of the 19th century, the estate counted one town and eleven villages, 2 193 hectares of all land, four Meierhofs and several industrial facilities such as a brewery and a distillery in Staré Město. The last member of Herberstein family in Landstein was the underage Count Otto who died in Vienna in September 1831 on cholera.
