Summary/Abstract: The article begins with general remarks on the functioning of the European traffic acci- dent compensation system, which is based on civil liability and compulsory third-party lia- bility insurance. The merits and drawbacks of the system are examined, and an attractive alternative to MTPL insurance is presented, namely insurance working to the direct advan- tage of the traffic accident victim, providing compensation independent of civil liability. Such insurance would ensure quick and certain compensation, and would be much cheap- er in terms of administrative costs. Its implementation would, however, most probably mean a reduction in the levels of compensation. The last part of the article examines ideas aimed at improving the existing system, in particular so-called direct settlement.
