Summary/Abstract: he article is an attempt at assessing the impact of consequences of the economic crisis on the condition of the insurance sector in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, and in particular Poland's situation in comparison with the rest of the region. The losses incurred by our market are not very painful. A drop in the life insurance premium was recorded only in 2009 and was probably the result of, among other things, the excessive increase in this type of insurance in the previous year. The results of the 1st quarter of 2010 show that the losses will be gradually compensated. In none of the years there was a drop in property or another personal form of insurance. In other countries of the region the losses are more painful and may cover a longer period, including the year 2010. The most difficult situation in this respect can be seen in Latvia, Lithuania and Hungary. What is interesting is a high position of PZU and PZU Życie on the market in the region of Eastern and Central Europe. This position is becoming even stronger
