Summary/Abstract: The following article attempts to capture and describe surety bonds, which can be regarded as a very heterogeneous phenomenon. Additionally, the attempt focuses almost entirely on the Polish market. The article is divided into five chapters. The first one draws attention to the specificity of surety bonds, which is independent of location: what sets them apart from the rest of the pro- ducts offered by insurance companies. The remaining chapters focus on the local specificity. In order to describe the Polish surety bond market, the second chapter takes a closer look at Polish law regarding surety bonds. Historical market data’s analysis makes the core of chapter 3. The analysis covers 17 years (from 1994 to 2010). The fourth chapter highlights crimes connected with surety bonds. Despite the fact that the phenomenon is not extensive, single losses are very costly and it is relatively difficult to detect cases in which bonds are obtained fraudulently. The final part tries to predict the future of surety bonds in Poland.
