Summary/Abstract: Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf is more than a schizophrenic novel, it can be considered a very long fairytale that presents the human path to self-knowledge and the passage to timelessness through the individuation process and archetypes. Hesse shows that the classic double is just a simplified myth, that the human being consists of a great variety of selves, not only of two. He is also bringing out the importance of playfulness as modus vivendi.
