Summary/Abstract: Each year natural catastrophes result in increasingly more extensive economic losses all over the world. What has a big share in these losses is buildings and premises whose construction is dam- aged due to strong influence and weather conditions. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive programme aimed at financing consequences of natural catastrophes in Poland. The discussion on this issue starts only when such a catastrophe occurs, and dies down as fast as it appeared. What is, therefore, necessary is to address the issue, which is so important due to economic and social reasons, and propose certain solutions. This study discusses the possibility of introducing compulsory catastrophe insurance. It also indicates shortcomings of the current solutions in terms of financing consequences of naturalcatastrophes in Poland. Further in the article, the author analyses compulsory natural catastrophe programmes introduced in four European countries. On this basis, she attempts to demonstrate which solutions are worth implementing in Poland.
