Summary/Abstract: Over the last few decades the idea of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been becoming increasingly popular. Development of corporate social responsibility results mainly from changes in the way in which the company’s role in its environment is perceived. According to an opinion which becomes increasingly common, business is not only expected to deal with its core activity, but it should also take actions aimed at improving social and environmental conditions, i.e. exert positive pressure on its broadly understood surroundings.This study focuses on the discussion concerning corporate social responsibility in the context of the insurance sector. Insurance companies, which are the main entities in this sector, play an important role in the financial system of each developed country. Furthermore, as public trust institutions, they should conduct their activity honestly and in compliance with basic principles of commercial ethics. For this reason, the study discusses the issue of social responsibility as an inherent element of the socio-economic sense of insurance activity.The article aims to present the characteristic features of CSR in the context of the insurance sector. In addition, it attempts to describe tools which are appropriate for assessing corporate social responsibility activities at insurance companies
