Summary/Abstract: The main aim of the introduction of the bonus-malus system to motor insurance was to obtain a tool which would enable matching the insurance premium amount to the level of risk assumed by insur- ance undertakings correctly, and a stimulus influencing the frequency of adverse fortuitous events, i.e. vehicle thefts, road collisions and cases of insurance fraud. This system is currently widespread throughout the ...U. Unfortunately, more and more often opinions can be heard that its effectiveness is not always at a satisfying level. In order to assess the system’s tariff effectiveness the Markov chain theory and negative binomi- nal model are usually used. Thanks to these tools it is possible to approximately determine the level at which the insurance premium is matched to the motor risk insured. The aim of the article is to briefly present these methods and indicate the key areas of the system’s operation which are subject to assessment in them.
