Summary/Abstract: After the final incorporation of the territory of Western Balkans in the Roman Empire, the only force that could’ve pacified Illyrian communities was the Roman army. Keeping that in mind, the Romans stationed military legions and auxiliary troops in the province of Dalmatia. The most significant, but also the most attested was the military presence of two legions: legio VII Claudia pia fidelis and legio XI Claudia pia fidelis. Besides them, in the province of Dalmatia, the presence of many other legions and a large number of auxiliary troops is confirmed. The responsibility for the safety of the province was in the hands of consular beneficiaries, as well. This paper encompasses an overview of the presence of Roman military units on the territory of the province of Dalmatia, as well as conclusions about their role in the process of pacification of the Illyrian territory and the establishment of the Roman provincial system.
