Summary/Abstract: Sick leave shows the condition of many aspects of the functioning of society and the state. It provides, inter alia, on the effectiveness of the health, social welfare, labor market, and many other mechanisms- including insurance. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the phenomenon of absenteeism due to illness own in Poland and the UK. These two countries were compared with the fact that many Poles working in the country, as well as data for comparison are relatively homogeneous and available in both countries. Despite the fact that the working population in Poland (14 million people) is twice smaller than the corresponding in the UK (30 million people) in 2013 was reported a significantly higher number of days of sickness absence in Poland (213 million days) compared to the UK (131 million days). It follows that, on the one employed in Poland there were 15 days of sick leave, where- as in the United Kingdom, only four days. Also worrying is the continued since 2007, a high number of days of sickness absence in Poland, while in the British Isles is recorded a downward trend. Very interesting are differences in the percentage of types of disease leading to sick leave. Discrepancies relate primarily to the number of days of sick leave due to pregnancy and respiratory diseases. In Po- land, the group sickness “Pregnancy, childbirth and the childbed” is ranked at the top, with a value of 18.1 percent of the total number of days of sickness absence. In the UK pregnancy is in a group to- gether with diseases of the urogenital system, which is 3 percent of total sickness absence. In Poland, sickness absence due to respiratory diseases is 13.8 percent, and in the UK only 4 percent of total sick leave. It is worth emphasizing consistent and inter-led pro-health policy for a decade by the Brit- ish Government in the field of financial incentives and education of employers and employees, and preventive care, to optimize access to a doctor, promote employee health insurance, job security and systematic seal clearing system of exemptions and benefits. Recognizing that insurance is a problem, the author would like to justify the need to ensure the introduction of effective solutions to rationalize the real problem of sickness absence in Poland. This can be done by providing incentives for employers and employees, more comprehensive health insurance schemes and systematic verification of health and social services funded with public money. It should be assumed that all reasonable insurance so- lutions in this area may be interest of the Social Insurance Institution and employers’ organizations in Poland, which have repeatedly stressed the serious dimension of losses generated by the excessive scale of sickness absence.
